Watercare is seeking to engage a single delivery partner, supported by specialist subcontractors, under a design-and-build contract to upgrade both the Raahui Pookeka and Ngaaruawaahia Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) to a Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) process co-coupled to a Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR). These upgrades are key projects within the current Long-Term Plan (LTP) and will enable both plants to meet river discharge quality standards.
The MBR process will deliver consistently high-quality treatment, incorporating a filter barrier to protect the environment. This will expand discharge options compatible with community aspirations for the catchment. A new discharge consent is currently being progressed, there is confident support for a free-flowing discharge that supports natural regeneration.
