The University of Canterbury (UC) considers procuring high-quality, professional portable recording equipment to support a collaborative initiative between the School of Music and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO), based at the Ron Ball Studio in the Christchurch Town Hall.
This procurement forms part of the Digital Screen Programme and will deliver a critical capability for professional-standard large ensemble and orchestral recording. The equipment will enable recording for film, game, and animation scoring, as well as broader teaching, research, and production activities.
The proposed solution is a portable recording equipment designed to maximise utilisation across multiple environments. It will support recording activities at the Ron Ball Studio while also enabling flexible deployment for other venues, live events, and broadcasting requirements.
The required solution includes, but is not limited to, the following components:
• Core Recording Platform
A high-performance recording system capable of delivering industry-standard audio capture, processing, and storage suitable for professional music and screen scoring production.
• Capture Front End
Microphones, preamps, and associated equipment required to accurately capture orchestral and ensemble performances with high fidelity.
• Monitoring and Control
Systems enabling real-time monitoring, mixing, and control of recording sessions, ensuring accuracy and quality during production.
• Connectivity and Synchronisation
Infrastructure to support seamless integration between components, including signal routing, digital/analogue interfacing, and reliable synchronisation across devices.
• Infrastructure and Support Equipment
Ancillary equipment required to enable deployment, portability, durability, and efficient operation across multiple recording environments.
The solution must be scalable, compatible with existing UC and CSO infrastructure, and suitable for shared use in a professional recording context.
Detailed technical specifications and component requirements will be provided as part of the forthcoming Request for Quote (RFQ) process.
