Overview

This procurement relates to the construction and installation of resilience upgrades for the artesian cooling system in the Ernest Rutherford building.

The Ernest Rutherford building houses specialised research laboratories and equipment that are dependent on a continuous artesian cooling system. At present there is no redundancy; the building relies on a single pump located above the artesian well. If that pump fails, cooling to critical laboratory equipment ceases immediately. The consequence of such a failure would be catastrophic with disruption to research, significant financial loss through damaged equipment, and reputational damage to the University.

The scope of works includes three zones and will be delivered by a single package of works by one contractor:

• Zone 1: Lobby Artesian Well – Construct a new wall to encapsulate the artesian well manhole within the plant room, relocate services, and install new mechanical plant, pipework, ductwork, and controls.
• Zone 2: Ground Hydraulics Plant Room – Construct a new concrete plinth, supply and install new mechanical plant with associated pipework, ductwork, and controls.
• Zone 3: Level 6 Plant Room – Construct two concrete plinths, refurbish and relocate the heat exchanger, and provide new mechanical plant, pipework, ductwork, and controls.
