Overview

Ministry for Primary Industries (the Ministry) will soon be going to market for a structured, desk-based literature review to assess how gene technologies are being used in forestry and woody biomass contexts. The review will identify capability gaps, research barriers, technology maturity and potential opportunities for New Zealand.

The literature review will be structured around the two technology pathways, which together represent the main ways gene technology is being applied across the forestry value chain:
1. Gene technology for microbes and biological systems
Applications where engineered microbes or enzymes break down woody biomass or convert it into bioproducts, including evidence of pilot‑scale, demonstration, or commercial deployment.
2. Gene technology for trees
Modification of wood chemistry or structure to improve processing efficiency in woody-biomass regimes, and modification of tree-level traits relevant to timber regimes (e.g. growth rate, wood density, stress resistance, biomass yield). This includes documented international field trials and environmental releases in forestry settings.
