While physical labels continue to be the primary risk management tool for protecting public health, digital labelling technology has the potential to provide trust, transparency, and efficiency benefits. It can also better inform and empower consumers.
The Minister for Food Safety has requested MPI undertake a trial of digital labelling to inform opportunities for digital labelling within the trans-Tasman Food Regulation System. The trial will take place in approved stores and trial participants will be subject to strict eligibility criteria, requirements and conditions.
The trial participants will be limited to a maximum of 4 food businesses, with a maximum of 2 sites for each business, totalling up to 8 locations. Until 8 April, New Zealand Food Safety is seeking expressions of interest to participate in the trial. More information about the trial can be found here: Digital food labelling trial | NZ Government
As trial participants have not yet been selected, there are aspects of the trial that cannot be fully defined at this stage. Respondents should incorporate appropriate assumptions and flexibility when preparing a fit for purpose proposed solution.
MPI will provide an opportunity to attend a Procurement Scoping and Briefing meeting to support respondents and address any questions.
