Te Uru Rākau – New Zealand Forest Service (TUR – NZFS) is seeking a supplier/s who can establish a short rotation forestry experimental planting programme utilising a TUR – NZFS design (refer to Additional Information: Woody Biomass Provisional Trial Design). The trial will use that same base design in all sites, with preference for only minor essential adjustment to suit site conditions. It aims to investigate how different species under a range of short rotation regimes (including coppicing), perform around New Zealand. The goal of the programme is to identify the value of approaches to silvicultural management of alternative species in different regions which can lead to an increased volume of woody biomass.
This opportunity is targeted in six regions: Northland, Central North Island, Gisborne or Wellington, Nelson, North Canterbury, and South Canterbury. Suppliers invited to this opportunity have the flexibility to bid for one or more regions.
Options for six trial sites across the listed regions have been identified by MPI. The trial range is between 2.5 and 5 hectares in size and will cover a range of land types. The successful supplier/s will fit the TUR – NZFS design to each site and establish the trial in up to six regions. It is intended for the supplier/s to undertake this work over two planting seasons and three years in total, after this time the programme will be handed back over to TUR – NZFS for ongoing maintenance and monitoring.
