The Native Afforestation Research Programme is an initiative aimed to identify and provide guidance to remove barriers to the establishment of native forests, creating long-term carbon sinks to offset emissions that are difficult to eliminate. A key component of this initiative is addressing the gaps in mātauranga Māori approaches within native nursery practices. This project seeks to build on previous research by conducting a focused review and interviews with Māori-led nurseries to gather insights on seed collection, plant quality standards, traceability systems, and biosecurity. This research will focus on addressing gaps identified in previous studies by conducting a desk-based literature review and interviews with Māori-led nurseries.
