The Native Afforestation Programme is a critical, long-term initiative aimed at removing barriers to the establishment of native forests to support carbon sequestration efforts. A vital part of this initiative is researching the production of forestry-grade containerised seedlings, which offer a more cost-effective and manageable alternative to traditional native seedlings, which can be time-intensive and difficult to establish due to their larger size. However, while containerised seedlings provide a promising solution, they also present challenges, including lower survival rates and increased competition from faster-growing weeds.
This research will focus on developing and evaluating forestry-grade sustainable containerised seedlings, suitable for establishing native forests as long-term carbon sinks. Suppliers will conduct research trials across New Zealand, testing different container sizes (125mL–500mL) which have minimal environmental impacts for optimal seedling growth, field establishment, and survival under various environmental conditions. Integration of Mātauranga Māori and maramataka practices is encouraged throughout the project, where appropriate. The aim is to identify the most successful and cost-effective container systems for promoting seedling growth and ensuring strong field establishment. This work will contribute to developing more efficient methods for native forest restoration, ultimately supporting New Zealand's broader environmental goals for carbon offsetting and sustainable land use.
