The Low Emission and Sustainable Agriculture (LESA) Extension Programme (the LESA Programme) is part of a wider initiative to support farmers, growers and Māori producers of food and fibre products (Producers) to transition to a low emissions future.
The Maori-designed and led (extension) programme specifically supports Māori Producers to transition to a low emissions future.
Both programmes received funding for four years through Budget 22 Climate Emergency Response Fund (CERF).
Each programme funds access to evidence-based information and extension initiatives and associated activities to support low emissions land use and climate resilience through farm system changes, land use change, and adoption of new tools and technologies as they become available. It will also support development of capability and capacity in respect of emissions reduction and low emission land use among primary industry advisers.
Emissions reduction is a rapidly changing space for policy-makers and Producers. The Programmes are operating in an environment of fast-moving policy and regulatory change, new market demands, significant investment in science aimed at accelerating the tools available to farmers, and continued debate (and some misinformation) around human-induced climate change and the need for New Zealand’s primary Producers to respond.
We are wanting to establish a monitoring and evaluation framework for the Programmes covering all Producers including Māori for future monitoring and evaluation to ensure what is being delivered/undertaken meets the requirements of Producers to make the changes needed to deliver a low emissions and sustainable agriculture future.
