Overview

The Fisheries Change Programme is working to ensure the sustainable economic, social, and cultural value of New Zealand’s fisheries. This is being achieved through, amongst other initiatives, the rollout of on-board cameras on up to 300 commercial vessels by the end of 2024.

To further the work and outcomes through on-board cameras initiative, we’re looking to invest in an innovation fund. The purpose of this innovation fund is to develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other technology innovations to increase functionality and reduce human review, submission, and storage costs of the video footage.

Planning is currently underway to develop a Strategy to guide how this fund is utilised. It is currently envisioned that the research fund will be made available for a number of different proposals that will differ in size, outcome sought and procurement approach.

This is a Future Procurement Opportunity (FPO). A FPO is an alert to suppliers of a potential upcoming procurement activity, though does not represent a commitment by MPI to procure, however provides an indication to the market about the potential future activity. Suppliers can subscribe to this FPO, and MPI may use this list to assist with market research. The FPO will be linked to the applicable Request for Proposals (RFP) so that those suppliers who have subscribed to this FPO will get automatically notified of those RFPs being released.

In preparation for the procurement, MPI would like to undertake pre-market engagement with some prospective suppliers to be a better informed customer, in particular the artificial intelligence market. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss your company and obtain insight into your market, as this will help MPI prepare to go out to market in getting the best outcome to meet the operational needs. Any resulting discussions will be respectful of IP and commercially sensitive information. If you are willing to meet with MPI, could you please contact paige.wong@mpi.govt.nz by 8 March 2023. We’re expecting to start our engagements in the next four weeks.
