Develop the Electronic Automated Reporting System (EARS) proof of concept through further development, ruggedization and at-sea trials. The opportunity lies in managing the declining population of seabirds by intervening with threats on the high seas. The current bycatch levels of seabirds, including the Antipodean Albatross is poorly known. We are concentrating on international distant water longline fishing fleets as what evidence there is indicates they are likely to be the major cause of Antipodean albatross mortality from incidental bycatch. While we acknowledge that other factors may play a role in their decline, reducing bycatch mortality is the one place that human intervention can be applied.
