On 8 February 2026, a fire at Taupō-nui-a-Tia College destroyed the 12 Teaching Space (12TS) Nelson Block. The Ministry undertook an immediate emergency response, which included demolition of the damaged building and clearance of the affected site to ensure safety and enable the College to continue operating.
To support continuity of teaching, the MoE entered into a temporary lease arrangement with Toi Ohomai, allowing partial relocation of teaching functions offsite until 31 August 2026. In parallel, temporary on-site accommodation is being established through the relocation of Ministry-owned assets between June and August 2026. These works include: Installation of a permanent 4TS Offsite Manufactured Building (OMB) quad, and deployment of eight refurbished relocatable teaching spaces (A20s) to provide interim capacity.
The Ministry is now progressing the long-term redevelopment to replace the balance of lost teaching spaces (8) and restore permanent capacity at the College. The Ministry’s Standard Planning team has developed a long-term solution using the standardised school design approach. An A2.0 typology building from the Standard School Design Typologies and Layouts catalogue has been identified as the preferred option.
The A2.0 typology is a two-storey teaching block, generally comprising: eight teaching spaces. Associated administration, resource areas and circulation spaces. Plus amenities including accessible sanitary facilities, and vertical circulation (including lift).
The redevelopment works will be delivered via a two-stage NZS3916:2013 Design & Construct contract. A closed tender is being conducted to 4x suppliers.
Please note that the draft contract and pricing schedule will be provided next week. We are expecting the A2.0 drawings to be ready for release by 05June - so we have extended the tender period by 1 week to account for this delay. We'll keep you informed if there are any further delays with this (as noted in pre tender correspondence the A2.5 that you already have is set to be replaced with the A2.0 that will contain some minor differences). Note site visit to be arranged and advised by NTT, we have arranged a project briefing session via Teams and put a dial in link within the RFP. You may bring along your design teams (if external) to the teams call.
All queries to be sent via the GETS Q&A function.
