Marlborough Girls’ College is undergoing a major redevelopment following the cancellation of the co-location project Te Tātoru o Wairau.
Stage 1 of this multi-stage redevelopment involves the refurbishment of the existing Library ‘L Block’. The school must remain operational throughout construction, and specific restricted access to areas obstructed by the construction compound may be required dependant on the successful tenderer’s methodology approach.
This site is an operational school so will have limited options for construction access and material delivery. Delivery times will be restricted based on the school timetable for pick-up and drop-off. The site is known to contain asbestos which is documented on the Asbestos Management Plan for the School.
Marlborough Girls’ College (MGC) and Marlborough Boys’ College (MBC) (the Colleges) are in Blenheim and began as the co-educational Marlborough High School in 1900. Marlborough High School split into MGC and MBC in 1963 after the community voted for single-sex education.
Condition issues at the Colleges were identified between 2011 and 2013. These included building code deficiencies, general deterioration, weathertightness issues, and earthquake resilience issues.
Because of the extent of the issues, the MGC and MBC Boards of Trustees initiated a discussion with the Ministry and the community around the future of secondary education in Blenheim. An initial investigation into co-locating both schools again was ultimately found to be unaffordable and hence the current project direction to proceed with Redevelopment in-situ at each of the current schools’ campus (MGC and MBC).
