Maitai School is a co-educational day school located in central Nelson, catering to students aged 5 to 21 with complex learning needs. The existing base school, built in 1982 on Tasman Street, has been deemed unfit for purpose due to outdated infrastructure, limited accessibility, and non-compliance with current NZ Building Code and Ministry of Education standards. The constrained site layout and aging facilities no longer support modern special education practices or flexible learning environments.
Following years of engagement between the Ministry and the School since 2014, a decision was made to relocate and rebuild the School on the site currently occupied by Salisbury Residential School. This site will be optimised to accommodate both schools, with Salisbury undergoing its own refurbishment.
