Logan Park is situated in a relatively unique Dunedin microclimate where the buildings are exposed to limited direct sun and the surrounding hills and bush create a damp environment.
iA Building Condition Survey from 2020 identified the cladding and guttering as the primary failure and cause for the weathertightness, leaking and subsequent mould ingress and growth within Block E. School led remediation took place in 2021. Block E was temporarily closed due to excessive spores and mould created by the leaky building. Temporary fixes such as Mold treatment and internal decoration were carried out and were allowed to last up to 2 years. As part of the remediation programme mould levels are surveyed and cleaning is carried out each term break. This is not a sustainable approach or a healthy environment. Another site wide report was conducted in 2023 leading to the recommendation of the demolition and rebuild of Block E.
The project involves the demolition of the existing mathematics block and the construction of a new mathematics block in its place, utilising the existing substructure. The new building will be built off the existing suspended concrete slab, which significantly minimises the need for extensive groundworks. The new structure will meet modern educational needs, provide an improved learning environment and maintain the overall aesthetic and functionality.
