General description of the Project:
Chisnallwood Intermediate is part of the Christchurch Schools Redevelopment (CSR) programme. The school site consists of 20 blocks (42 Teaching spaces) as the school site was extended when the adjacent Avondale school closed and several additional blocks from Avondale were retained and now form part of the school’s building portfolio.
ii. Part 1: Develop a Bulk and Location Plan to clearly identify all blocks to be demolished/rationalised to reduce the school’s surplus building stock in line with their SPG entitlement.
Part 2: Lead design
(a) Develop the refurbishment scope for the school’s existing teaching blocks (refer to site plan-indicative scope, Appendix 1) includes conversion of all student toilets into single cell cubicles. Multiple blocks require weathertightness remediation to varying degrees, this may be the only work undertaken on some of the blocks and therefore work could potentially be completed in parallel to the design phase.
(b) Provide structural strengthening design for several blocks – indicative blocks are highlighted on pages 5 to 8 of the DEE summary report (Appendix 1).
(c) Explore the potential for an extension for block 3 technology to provide two additional teaching spaces (budget permitting)
(d) Explore the potential of erecting a covered roof area over hardstand (budget permitting - refer to Chisnallwood Condition Summary, Appendix 1.pdf)
Part 3: Construction
The finalised design will inform the extent of construction on site. This stage will require considered planning with the school as the school will remain operational throughout.
iii. Outcome sought: To align the school’s SPG entitlement to their Build Roll of 500; to remediate all Weathertightness issues on some blocks (as mentioned previously, some of this work may be undertaken in parallel to the design phase where the remediation is more urgent); to structural strengthen blocks identified by the Ministry (refer to ii(b) above); refurbishment of existing classrooms to create modern learning environments to align with the school’s teaching pedagogy.
iv. History: Often referred to as "Chissy", Chisnallwood was first established in 1967 to meet the needs of the Baby Boomers and the post war period of population growth. The school grew to a roll of approximately 950 in the 1980s before dropping back to below 400 in the 1990s. A period of consolidation followed while new programmes were initiated and as the school went through a substan
