Overview

As the festive season approaches we would like to take this opportunity to advise you of the Ministry of Education’s position on receiving of gifts and hospitality.

As public servants, it is important that our staff are seen to be completely impartial and that there can be no perception that they are benefiting personally from their role in working with suppliers and/or determining who is awarded contracts. To this end, our staff have been instructed:

• Not to accept any gifts from suppliers or potential suppliers. If a gift is received unsolicited it will be returned to the sender. Examples of this type of gift include items such as a bottle of wine, a box of chocolates or a gift basket that have been couriered to one of our offices.
• Only to accept hospitality if it is infrequent, inexpensive and openly provided (e.g. a cup of coffee in a cafe)

We ask that you respect our position and not offer or provide our staff with any gift or inappropriate hospitality and to not be offended if our staff decline any such.

If you have any questions regarding the above, please email eis.commercial@education.govt.nz.
