1.1 TKKM o Te Tonga o Hokianga was established in 2002 and initially operated out of premises adjacent to Pa Te Aroha marae and then relocated to the current site in 2004. It became a state funded s1555 kura kaupapa Maori in 2005 (i.e. the School charter requires the school to operate in accordance with Te Aho Matua) and in 2010 was granted composite school status (years 1-13).
The project is the design and construction of a Maori immersion school (years 1-13) with a final roll of 200 students. The school is likely to be built in two (or more) stages. Stage A will comprise accommodation for 150 students, and the timing and scope of any subsequent stage(s), up to a maximum total roll of 200, will depend on future growth. The construction budget for Stage A is in the order of $9.5M.
