Ward 53, located on Level 3 of the Elizabeth Rothwell Building at Waikato Hospital’s Hamilton campus, has remained vacant for approximately 12 years due to deteriorating infrastructure.

In response to the growing need for additional bed capacity, a mandate has been established to repurpose Ward 53 as a decant ward accommodating both adult and paediatric patients. This ward will facilitate the phased refurbishment of other inpatient wards across the Hamilton campus and is expected to serve this purpose for up to five years.
