Ara Poutama Aotearoa | Department of Corrections is planning the procurement of dental services for people in prison.
We expect to conduct a competitive tender process inviting tenders from qualified practitioners who are dedicated to making a significant impact on the lives of people in our care.
The Department is planning a tender process to establish dental services providers for prison sites. This means that I provide formal tender documentation outlining our environment and requirements and request proposals. I will provide this information via email to interested parties and also publish it on the government electronic tendering system. I am aiming for this process to be easy from the dentist's point of view.
We are still clarifying our requirements. To provide an indication of the scale of the requirement a dental services provider might need to provide service for between four and 25 prisoners a week at a prison (depends on the size of the prison). We will be able to be more precise when we publish tender documentation.
The current services:
1) Have been in place for quite a while and it is now appropriate to tender these services
2) End 30-Nov-25 and we are aiming to have new services in place to start 1-Dec-25
3) Typically are provided via a contract with a local dental practice - the volume of work at each site doesn't warrant us to employ a dentist full time for each prison
4) Some dental practices provide services for more than one prison
5) The dentist usually visits our prison site and uses our dental chair at the site
We have some advertisements which I can draw your attention to:
1. An advertisement with the Māori Dental Association, I think it is on their Instagram page,
2. An advertisement with the NZ Dental Council – search on their advertisement query page
https://www.nzda.org.nz/public/careers-in-dentistry/classified-ad-search,
3. This future procurement opportunity advertised here on the government electronic tendering system.
The next step is that I prepare tender documentation and provide through to you and I hope that I can achieve this in June or early July. The tender documentation will outline what we are looking for, indicate the volume of work at the various sites, and tell you a little about our environment and some of the complexities of working with us. You’d then be able to tender a response to that documentation.
