The Council, in partnership with local hapū, is currently progressing a review of the Sites and Areas of Significance to Māori chapter of the operative Whangārei District Plan (WDP). The goal is to strengthen protection of these sites and areas from destruction, damage, or inappropriate modifications.
Whilst not all sites and areas of significance to Māori have archaeological significance, many of them do. For those sites with recorded or suspected archaeological remains, archaeological evidence is required to support the plan review.
Deliverable 1 - Methodology Report:
A methodology report that outlines the processes and evidence sources used to prepare archaeological site assessments.
Deliverable 2 - Stage 1 Preliminary Report:
The Stage 1 Report will provide key information about all sites and areas of significance to hapū that have archaeological values based on a desktop review of available evidence, identifying any important gaps in evidence.
Deliverable 3 - Stage 2 Detailed Report:
The Stage 2 Report will provide further information and analysis for a subset of sites that require more in-depth evidence to improve the prospect of successful scheduling through the formal plan change process. This further information may include findings from published evidence, engagement with hapū, or observations from site visits.
