Overview

The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) provides funding for both the Growing Up in New Zealand (GUiNZ) study and the Children and Families Research Fund (the Fund) in order to support research that informs government policy and contributes to public good.

The Fund supports policy-relevant research that uses data from the GUiNZ longitudinal study. Growing Up in New Zealand is New Zealand’s largest contemporary longitudinal study of child development. The study has followed more than 6,000 children from before they were born and is expected to end when they are about 21 years old.

The purpose of the Fund is to support research that meets New Zealand’s evidence needs and to build the number and diversity of researchers using GUiNZ data to inform priority government policy development and decision-making.

The current round of funding for 2021/22 is the fifth round of funding available. The Fund consists of $750,000 available funding each year distributed via two types of grants: Standard Research Grant and New User Grant.
