Overview

The Taitamariki 500 (T500) is Northlands new youth engagement strategy and will inform how we engage with youth clients (18-24 year olds in receipt of a benefit), employers, commercial and agency partners as well as training providers. Based on the learnings from KODE (Kaikohe Opportunities Dreams and Experiences) and GROW (Growing Regional Opportunities through Work), T500’s aim is to pathway all 18-24 year olds in receipt of a benefit in to employment, education or training by the end of June 2019. As at December 2016 there were over 2600 unemployed youth in Northland.
To affect a drop in youth benefit figures we need to make a significant step change with a particular focus on youth engagement practises as well as the support mechanisms required to ensure they succeed in thier chosen paths.
One of the key learnings of the trial is that a significant number of NEETs couldn’t be work ready because of complex multi-layered that could include:
Literacy and numeracy – low levels,
Cognitive function
Early exposure to alcohol and drug use/feotal alcohol syndrome
Mental health – aggression not able to show empathy, history of delinquent behaviour, trauma such as unresolved death of a child/siblings and parents
Poor general health status e.g. oral, hearing, eyesight, sexual health, poor diet, poor physical activity, poor relationships.
Housing issues

Support can be required for at least 6 months (Potential to be extended to 12 months).
