ENRICH is an evidence-based programme with the aim of enhancing sensitive and responsive interactions between teachers and young children. Services are delivered by the supplier to staff who work at Early Childhood Education (ECE) centres in two phases.
The first phase of ENRICH is designed for toddlers during a period of rapid language development (ages 1 to 3 years). ENRICH relies upon conversations, books, songs, and games in the early childhood setting to strengthen toddlers’ oral language development.
The second phase of ENRICH (ages 3 to 5 years) draws upon a previously trialled book-reading and conversation programme called Tender Shoots that promotes children’s understanding of the meaning of stories (Rich Reading and Reminiscing) and their awareness of sounds (Strengthening Sound Sensitivity). Both skills are foundational for children’s reading acquisition in primary school and self-regulation. A new module promotes children’s mathematical skills via educator-child maths talk (Maximising Mathematical Moments).
The second phase of ENRICH builds on the first layer based on progressive scaffolding to gently advance children’s oral language, early literacy, mathematical, and self-regulation skills.
