Under the National Civil Defence Emergency Management Plan Order 2015, MBIE is the lead agency responsible for the coordination of the provision of temporary accommodation for people displaced after an emergency.
The Temporary Accommodation Service (TAS) provides accommodation to people whose homes have been damaged by a natural disaster while their home is repaired or rebuilt, or somewhere to stay before moving into their new permanent accommodation.
A key resource for TAS is the strategic reserve of portable cabins which, when not deployed, are stored at military bases in the North and South Islands. Currently TAS owns 26 portable cabins located at either North or South Island sites. Timely deployment of the strategic reserve is a critical part of the TAS response.
TAS requires a medium term agreement with a company to transport MBIE’s supply of portable cabins when needed.
