KiwiRail is seeking to engage a civil contractor to replace the existing culvert at 598.410 km on the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) line.
The project involves upgrading an undersized culvert located at chainage 598.410 km beneath the NIMT railway track in the Waikato region, southwest of the Whangamarino Wetland.
Currently, KiwiRail maintains a 750 mm diameter concrete culvert that conveys wetland water flow between the larger southwestern Whangamarino Wetland and a smaller wetland situated between the railway tracks and Wattle Road (approximate location shown in Figure 1). A 450 mm diameter culvert owned by Waikato District Council conveys flows under Wattle Road; however, this culvert is undersized, causing frequent overtopping of the road during high water levels. The KiwiRail culvert is a high priority for replacement as it is both undersized and in poor condition due to age.
Proposed works include:

Upgrading the existing culvert to a 1,350 mm diameter concrete culvert in the same location, designed to withstand a 100-year storm event.
Installing pre-cast wingwalls to control erosion.
Embedding the culvert by 25% to provide for fish passage.
