KiwiRail Holdings Limited ("KiwiRail") invites pre-selected parties to submit their tenders ("RFT Response") for the supply of physical works for the Bridge 181 MNL Piers Replacement project ("the Goods/Services").
This RFT is issued by KiwiRail’s Infrastructure – Project Delivery Team to engage a suitably qualified and experienced contractor to carry out the replacement of piers 1 through 5 on Bridge 181, located at kilometrage 329.906 on the Main North Line (MNL) in Blenheim, South Island.
Bridge 181 MNL is a single-track, seven-span, simply supported riveted steel girder bridge on timber pier foundations, crossing the Tuamarina River A. The bridge, constructed in 1962, is 51 metres long and comprises seven steel spans supported by eight piers of hardwood piles. It is situated approximately 10 km north of Blenheim, Marlborough, near State Highway 2.
The timber piers have deteriorated significantly and now require replacement. Although some steelwork strengthening has been completed over the past decade, it has not addressed the degradation of the timber piers.
Due to the condition of the piers, the normal line speed of 90 km/h has been reduced to a Temporary Speed Restriction (TSR) of 25 km/h, which was reviewed and increased to 40 km/h in August 2025.
The objective of this project is to replace the principal load-bearing elements (PLBE) of Bridge 181 MNL. This includes the full replacement of the timber pier foundations with new steel and/or concrete foundation systems.
Please refer to the attached RFT documents for detailed specifications and requirements.
