The opening of the Hamilton section of the Waikato Expressway in late 2021 has prompted commencement of the revocation process of State Highway status on the section of Morrinsville Road between the Cambridge Road roundabout and the Waikato Expressway overbridge. A Single Stage Business Case (SSBC) completed in 2022 provides the case for investment required to ensure that Morrinsville Road is fit for purpose following the completion of the revocation process at which point Hamilton City Council will become the Road Controlling Authority. A funding agreement between NZTA and HCC has been entered into for Hamilton City to manage the delivery of the fit for purpose works.
