Overview

Gisborne District Council is building Kiwa Pools – a modern multi-purpose aquatic facility the whole community can enjoy. It replaces the aging Olympic pool complex on Centennial Marine Drive, which for many years has been a highly valued family destination for our Gisborne and wider Tairāwhiti community, particularly over the summer.

Our exciting new regional destination complex offers a wide range of sport and recreational opportunities. It also celebrates, through the integration of our cultural narrative throughout, a uniquely Tairāwhiti experience. We are conservatively expecting our visitation will be at least 300,000 visitors annually. However, we would not be surprised if the facilities' popularity way surpasses that number.

Kiwa Pools is ideally located with expansive views over Waikanae beach and at the terminus of the popular Oneroa cycle and walkway. The attractive foyer area in which the café is located, has a bespoke taniwha carved ceiling, welcoming pawaha entrance and clean contemporary lines. It is a great place to relax and either take in the views of the sea or watch the buzz of people coming and going.

A savvy café operator has all the ingredients to make the Kiwa café a destination of choice for locals and visitors to the region alike. In addition to the facility users, you have the opportunity to capture the early morning ‘coffee and scone’ dog walkers and runners, cultural tourists, and those looking for the perfect spot for a relaxed catch-up over morning or afternoon tea or lunch. There are also add-on catering opportunities as the foyer area and adjacent meeting room/family room are available to hire for evening functions.
