Overview

The Pike River Mine Disaster is a tragic landmark in New Zealand's health and safety history that sent devastating consequences rippling across the world. The Department of Conservation has been working side by side with the Pike River families including most recently, commencing construction of the Mine Portal Pavilion - a memorial to the 29 men. Now the final part of the project is ready for inception and delivery, namely the telling of the Pike River Mine story in the place where the tragedy occurred.

We are seeking a storytelling and interpretation specialist to deliver this significant part of work including:
- All writing and editing (English and Te Reo Maōri as guided by mana whenua)
- Creative design of all interpretation materials
- Graphic design, including illustrations, images and template images
- Image research and copyright clearance
- Arrange and overseeing the production and delivery of all interpretation elements (once approved) including any installation specifications by 23 October 2026
- Working with key partners and stakeholders on specific story elements, as required
- Arranging travels to the Pike River Mine site, Hokitika or Greymouth for the purpose of familiarization, design and planning (costs to be included in proposal).
