Overview

Predator Free 2050 is an ambitious goal of ridding New Zealand of possums, rats and stoats by 2050. To support this goal, the government, via the Department of Conservation, is investing to improve current predator control tools and technology via the Tools to Market project.

Tools to Market will seek, evaluate, and contract proposals for control tools that are currently in development, where this would accelerate completion and implementation.
Proposals will be contracted for a timeframe appropriate to the proposal for a maximum of four years, to develop new or improved tools in the short to medium term. Proposals must be for development activities (such as trials, engineering, construction, registration, hazard assessments) and not for commercialisation activities (such as production, marketing, distribution).

Tools to Market has three key objectives:
1. Refinement of current predator control tools to make them safer and more cost-effective
2. Development of new or improvement of current tools to suppress predators at a landscape scale
3. Expansion of the predator control arsenal so that a range of tools are available for different environments and situations.

There are 4 Potential Tools to Market projects and each of these projects are expressed in separate RFP documents.

Tools must be in development, with evidence supplied such as proof of concept, prototype or trials completed.

The third of the potential tools to market is Lures pest deterrents or non target repellents.

Lures and deterrents may target one or more of possums, rats and/or stoats. Non-target repellents may deter native species or game animals. Tools must be in development, with evidence supplied such as proof of concept, prototype, or trials completed.
