Overview

Ōtākaro Limited, on behalf of Te Tai Ōhanga, The New Zealand Treasury, will be releasing a Request for Information (RFI) on 29 September 2021 seeking information regarding options for the long-term management of acid mine drainage (AMD) at Stockton Coal Mine on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.

AMD generated on the wider Stockton Plateau is a result of more than 120 years of mining, undertaken by the Crown, Crown-owned entities and private 3rd party operators. As a result, the Crown has a long-term liability with respect to the management of AMD at Stockton Mine and Te Tai Ōhanga, The New Zealand Treasury has the responsibility for managing this liability for the Crown.

The information sought through this RFI will assist in developing a longlist of AMD management approaches for the Stockton Mine AMD Management Business Case, which is currently being prepared for Te Tai Ōhanga, The New Zealand Treasury. The information will also support identification of the preferred option for the long-term management of AMD at the Stockton Mine. This will consider both price and non-price factors, including the ability to achieve desired environmental outcomes, ability to achieve broader benefits for the community and flexibility to meet changing regulatory standards.

The purpose of the RFI is to seek information from potential Respondents who can support or deliver AMD management approaches that will achieve the Crown’s desired objectives for the future long-term management of AMD at Stockton Mine.
