The purpose of this Request for Quote (RFQ) is to secure a main contractor to remove the stand of redwood trees located on council land at Hawkings Crescent.
A large stand of notable Sequoia sempervirens (California redwoods), located at Hawkings Crescent was originally planted as farm shelterbelt. These trees are now situated within an urban context, adjacent to residential dwellings and a retirement village. During Cyclone Tam (April 2025), one of these trees fell, narrowly missing a gardener in a maintenance shed - WorkSafe NZ has since classified this as a “near-fatality” incident.
The objective of this project is to:
1. Eliminate the risk of the trees falling in high wind by removing them.
2. Remove the trees with minimal disruption to the neighbouring properties, particularly theKerikeri Retirement Village, which has a hospital wing and dementia ward in the buildingsadjacent to the trees which are unable to be evacuated during tree removal.
