Overview

Te Nukuao Wellington Zoo is New Zealand’s first zoo, and Wellington’s oldest conservation organisation, caring for animals since 1906. The Zoo has been a not-for-profit charitable trust since 2003. The Trust runs the Zoo on behalf of Wellington City Council. At Te Nukuao Wellington Zoo we welcomed 279,656 visitors in 2023-24, our highest visitation ever. To maintain community expectations, animal welfare standards and sustainability and conservation outcomes it is important that we keep our Zoo interesting and exciting to visitors, providing a new adventure every time

This procurement process is being carried out to secure a long-term construction partner for the delivery of the Zoo’s annual capital renewals project work, including involvement in the design process and providing engineering and design expertise to provide excellent outcomes for the Zoo’s three customer groups, Visitors, Staff and the Animals in our care.

The Zoo manages all asset renewals work on behalf of the Council, which includes the delivery of several small-scale renewal projects across the Zoo animal habitats, visitor spaces and staff areas every year. Building methods are primarily to align with current NZ Building Standards, which should be incorporated into project designs where the size of the project does not require building consent. For non-standard building methodologies, Zoo specific requirements or material selections, the Zoo will work with the chosen provider to identify/specify materials on a project-by-project basis.

The Contract structure will allow for a mid-design process price estimate and a final design cost with any subtrades. The Zoo will then decide whether to move forward with construction with the agreed contract pricing – using pre-agreed contract terms in the draft framework contract included in this RFP.

A successful outcome for the Zoo will be a partner who can provide early contractor advice about construction methods, sustainable material options and design/engineering advice to develop a cost effective project design that delivers on key priorities for the Zoo team.
The successful supplier will show how early engagement in the design process can lead to successful project delivery and be able to show how they will deliver value-for-money through open procurement processes in collaboration with the Zoo project delivery team.
