What we are buying
This procurement relates to the purchase of services.
Wellington Water is procuring Hydrogeological Engineering and Modelling Support Services to assist with the sustainable management of groundwater resources, particularly the Waiwhetū Aquifer and the Waterloo and Gear Island wellfields.
The primary objective is to engage specialist hydrogeological expertise to support:
• Strategic planning and investment decision-making.
• Environmental risk management.
• Resource consent advice.
• Regulatory compliance under relevant regional and national frameworks.
This support is critical to maintaining the integrity of groundwater sources that supply up to 70% of the Greater Wellington region’s potable water during peak summer periods.
Scope of Services
The successful supplier will work under the direction and supervision of Wellington Water to deliver the following services:
• Provide technical advisory support for Waterloo and Gear Island wellfield operations, and broader groundwater and source water risk management.
• Undertake groundwater investigations, including Waiwhetū Aquifer studies, aquifer yield assessments, bore location optioneering, and water quality evaluations.
• Operate the HAM5 database model to support scenario assessments where issues are well-defined and within established guidelines.
• Review of groundwater-related resource consent applications submitted to Greater Wellington Regional Council.
• Advise Wellington Water when further specialist expertise is required for HAM5 maintenance, upgrades, or complex modelling tasks.
• Review and provide technical advice on groundwater-related resource consent applications submitted to Greater Wellington Regional Council, including support for notified submissions and expert evidence at hearings.
• Engage with Greater Wellington Regional Council and mana whenua to support source water risk understanding and management.
• Training and capability development for Wellington Water’s engineering, planning, and operations teams in hydrogeology, wellfield asset management, and source water risk management (including HAM5 model use).
