Overview
The Waikato Regional Council is currently reviewing Chapter 3.10 of the Waikato Regional Plan (Lake Taupō Catchment). The provisions were designed to protect the water quality of Lake Taupō. A significant part of the approach in these provisions is to cap nitrogen leaching. Farmer’s nitrogen discharge has effectively been capped since July 2007. To help evaluate the costs of the regional plan provisions, we need a better understanding of how farmers in the Lake Taupō catchment have been affected financially by the nitrogen cap, and how they may be affected over the medium term future. This research will also inform further policy development to protect water quality across the Waikato region.
