Overview

Waikato Regional Council is releasing 240 hectares of the Coromandel marine farming zone by a weighted attribute tender, and hereby calls for proposals to develop part or all of the available space.

The Coromandel marine farming zone may be used for the farming of fish or other fed aquaculture, and/or for multi-trophic aquaculture that includes at least one fed species. It may not be used solely for farming seaweeds or shellfish that do not require feeding.

The successful tenderer or tenderers will be issued an authorisation that allows them to apply for a resource consent with a term of 20 to 35 years. The authorisation to apply for consent cannot be transferred to another party and will lapse after two years if a consent application has not been lodged with Waikato Regional Council.

The zone consists of 300 hectares approximately 5 kilometres west of Waimate Island off the Coromandel Peninsula and 11 kilometres east of Waiheke Island. It lies in 33 to 36 metres of water depth. Part of the zone (20 per cent) has been allocated to Te Ohu Kaimoana Trustee Limited in accordance with the Māori Commercial Aquaculture Claims Settlement Act 2004. The remaining 240 hectares is now available.
