Possum Maintenance Control - Mt Karioi North, Mt Karioi South and Aria Priority Possum Control Areas (PPCA)

Waikato Regional Council invites tenders from Council Biosecurity Pre-
Approved Contractors to undertake possum control in the following Priority Possum Control
Areas (PPCAs):

 maintenance possum control in the Mt. Karioi North PPCA
o Approximately 675 hectares and 58 landowners
 maintenance possum control in the Mt. Karioi South PPCA
o Approximately 1,983 hectares and 43 landowners
 maintenance possum control in the Aria PPCA
o Approximately 5,576 hectares and 34 landowners
 initial possum control in the Nukuhakari – Awakino Sector 2 Farmland PPCA
o Approximately 5,046 hectares and 5 landowners

The Mount Karioi North PPCA consists of steep to rolling native forest and farmland. The
majority of farmland in the area is beef however, an organic farm is present. The boundary
goes from the edges of Mt Karioi public conservation land down to the coast with Whaanaga
Rd dissecting the PPCA. Therefore the habitat within the PPCA ranges from native forest, bush pasture margin and coastal. The PPCA is located on the northern side of Mt. Karioi and roughly 6km from Raglan Township.

The Mount Karioi South PPCA is located on the southern side of Mt. Karioi. The boundary runs from the slopes of Mt. Karioi, southwards and encompasses Ruapuke Rd. The majority of the land within the PPCA is farmland with some DOC forest. Most farmland is dry and dairy stock with only one farm stocking sheep. There is patchy possum habitat throughout the entire PPCA.

The Aria PPCA consists of rolling to steep hill country with scattered bush remnants. It
contains one Department of Conservation (DOC) reserve off Barclay Rd. Land use is
predominately sheep and beef farms, with some dairying and dairy support. This PPCA is
located south of the Aria Township.

The Nukuhakari – Awakino Sector 2 Farmland is a new PPCA. The Council is expanding its
possum control operations, further buffering its joint DOC/Council Nukuhakari – Awakino
Aerial operation on the Herangi Ranges and private land.

The new Nukuhakari – Awakino Sector 2 Farmland is approximately 10 kilometres north of
Awakino on the west coast. It bounds the Huikomako Reserve in the north, stretches south to
include the Stuart Russell Reserve and extends from the sea in the west, to Manganui Rd in the east.
