Southland Greenhouse Gas Emission Profile

The Ministry for the Environment (MfE) and the Tindall Foundation have partnered with Venture Southland (VS) to deliver the Carbon Neutral Advantage project.

As part of this project, Venture Southland is seeking expressions of interest to:
- Complete a Greenhouse Gas emission baseline for the Southland region broken down by key activity in line with the Ministry for the Environment “New Zealand’s Greenhouse Gas Inventory” format, including the following:
o Review of the initial Southland Greenhouse Gas Assessment prepared by Venture Southland in 2018
o Identification and filling of gaps in data using a range of sources, including energy and transport. Note appendix A which identifies some areas where Venture Southland has already identified further data requirement
o Utilising and updating a regional emission tool to reflect the latest IPCC Fifth Assessment Report emission factors and methodologies, suggest other or develop own tool
o Ground truth central Government sourced data as identified to be necessary, including methane and nitrous oxide emissions.


Standards:

- Within the limitations of the timeframe and budget, the baseline should as accurately as possible reflect the reality of greenhouse emissions in the region rather than draw solely on models, ideally portraying data by sectors of the economy
- Should be presented in such a form that it is possible for Venture Southland staff to update the baseline with new data in the future (or automate where possible)
- The core baseline tool should also be supported by a short succinct report (5-page maximum) in word format and simple to understand infographic in pdf and png format
