The University of Otago is setting up the first dedicated Organic Geochemistry Research Facility in New Zealand.
We are purchasing an instrument package comprising GC, GC/MSD and LC/MSD.
The key instruments we require are new generations of chromatographs including Gas Chromatograph with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and a Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) and a High-Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC-MS). This facility will be used to characterize organic compounds extracted from natural sediment samples and archaeological artefacts.
The research facility will be used in the following research fields immediately at the University of Otago:
• Reconstructing past climates (ocean temperatures, continental rainfall, wind patterns)
• Reconstructing wind, rainfall and plant communities in prehistoric NZ
• Archaeological chemistry
• Past environment molecular proxy development
