Overview

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is growing and developing rapidly & becoming an integral factor in successful economic growth around the world. The Government wants to ensure NZ has people equipped with the ICT skills required to keep pace with developments.

Budget 2014 allocated $28.6m over 4 years for an ICT Graduate School programme which will deliver industry-focused education and research that builds connections between tertiary education providers & high-tech firms.

The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) & the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE) are developing an RFP to develop ICT graduate Schools in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. The high level objectives of the initiative are to produce graduates with work-relevant and business-focused skills, provide more direct pathways from education into employment, foster industry focused research, and to strengthen partnerships between education providers and the ICT industry.

In Christchurch, the initiative will be located in the soon to be established Christchurch Innovation Precinct. In the other cities, the initiatives will need to be integrated with the local innovation system, such as through local innovation precincts or technology hubs. In addition to providing education and research in specific locations, the programme will also involve the development of more broadly applicable ICT education initiatives that can be delivered through affiliated education providers throughout New Zealand.

The details, including the number and size of the ICT Graduate School programme initiatives, will be determined through a tender process that will seek collaborative proposals from one or more education providers and industry partners. It is intended that the Request for Proposal (RFP) will be issued in September 2014 on GETS. This Advance Notice of Procurement will provide the primary channel for interested parties to receive updates on the initiative until then.

The RFP will require strong industry/provider partnerships to be demonstrated. The TEC will compile a list of organisations interested in forming partnerships for this proposal - If you wish to be added to this list and have your details made available to others registered on GETS please email ictgradschools@tec.govt.nz with the appropriate name and contact details. This list will be published as an attachment.
