Overview
Many of New Zealand’s native fish are diadromous (they travel between freshwater and marine environments throughout their lifecycle). Manmade structures in streams such as culverts can disrupt this passage. Fish passage can be restored using remediation techniques such as removing the barrier, retrofitting fish ladders, baffles or spat rope to culverts or using rocks and pools to raise water levels.
ES has a target of restoring fish passage through 250 barriers between November 2020 and June 2025.
This work will require the successful contractor to assess each barrier and to design and then install an appropriate fish passage remediation solution.
