The importance of leadership alignment has long been spoken about across both Sport NZ and HPSNZ. Meaning that where you have strong, capable, aligned chairs and chief executives working together with wider board members and senior leadership teams, an organisation can truly thrive.
In 2018 Sport NZ led a process with a sample group of partners who have a vested interest in the delivery of the Sport NZ strategy across the Play, Active Recreation and Sport sector to obtain an in-depth understanding of capability and capacity in the areas of governance, leadership, and operations (human resources, finance, technology and stakeholder engagement) and the degree to which they were aligned. This process indicated that leadership development and focused work to ensure alignment is rarely something that partners have the ability or time to invest into.
As a result, Sport NZ is piloting an approach to leadership alignment with five organisations (three National Sport Organisations and Two Regional Sports Trusts) focused on integrated investment into leadership development. Essentially going deep to lift the capability and connectivity between the most critical areas of any organisation: governance (Chair, Board), leadership (CEO, SLT) and operations. We want to ensure the organisation is high performing, diverse and inclusive and can deliver consistently over time in a sustainable manner. We also want to ensure that there is a healthy culture within all levels of the organisation.
