Since the introduction of Sport NZ’s National Sporting Facilities Framework and Community Sport Strategy in 2015 the agency has been working closely with its 14 regional sports trust (RST) partners to develop and implement spaces and places (facilities) strategies. There are currently nine regions with a strategy in place. Some of these are under review, while others are at various stages of development.
Sport NZ wishes to accelerate its regional planning approach as it aims to see all 14 regions with a strategy developed, being implemented and, in some cases, being reviewed by the end of the current strategic period to 30 June 2020.
A regional planning approach with willing partners develops a shared purpose so that “collective thinking” delivers better value for each of the partners, and provides locally-led solutions providing benefits for the widest cross section of communities in each region.
This approach can then guide and lead decision making among strategic partners including funding organisations to enable improved investment outcomes. At the same time this enhances community outcomes and improves the ability to provide affordable, accessible, and sustainable facilities for sport and physical activity active recreation.
