As part of the approach Stats NZ has taken to engage with survey participants in the “Living in Aotearoa” Survey, $50 gift cards (supermarket, goods, and services vouchers/ gift cards) have been introduced as Koha for survey participants. The Living in Aotearoa survey is a longitudinal survey over 6 years undertaken between April to September.
The gifting of koha (gifts, tokens, and other contributions) or incentives is a practice to build, strengthen, enhance, and maintain relationships. They can therefore be an effective tool to encourage survey participation as a reciprocal gift in return for participants’ time, data and by acknowledging the relationship. Although koha is particular to Te Ao Māori and Aotearoa, the presentation of gifts to show appreciation is a common practice among many peoples of the world, including other New Zealanders.
The $50 gift cards are shipped to each Data Collection Specialist for gifting to survey participants. The Koha voucher/$50 gift card will be handed to the respondent once a commitment to do the survey has been made.
The number of $50 vouchers / gift cards required will be forecasted before the Living in Aotearoa survey commences 1st April each year.
Stats are seeking potential cost estimates for this project and would welcome advice on the likely cost of these services from Suppliers.
