Southern DHB Mental Health and Addiction Services, along with most other DHB provided mental health and addiction services, have many people with needs much greater than can be provided in the current configuration of community services. The result is a number of long-term patients blocking acute beds. This was flagged in He Ara Oranga: Report of the Government Inquiry into Mental Health and Addiction. More recently the issue was acknowledged by the Ministry of Health who, as part of the implementation of the recommendations of He Ara Oranga, have commenced work to alleviate capacity issues across New Zealand. Our own Independent Review of the Southern Mental Health and Addiction System Continuum has also highlighted this as an urgent challenge to resolve.
