RNZ is New Zealand’s independent non-commercial public media organisation and has proudly been so for 100 years.
A publicly funded crown entity, RNZ operates under a Charter that defines its purpose as serving the public interest. With around a third of New Zealand’s total population now living in Auckland, it is important that RNZ has a strong base in the city to produce content that informs, entertains and enlightens the people of New Zealand and reflect the diversity of Auckland’s varied communities.
Just under half of RNZ’s total staff work now from the Auckland region and RNZ’s current premises is at capacity and no longer fit for purpose in terms of future technologies. The new space (levels six and seven of the TVNZ building) offers an increase in size to allow for future growth as well as an opportunity to structure the space in a way that makes sense for a public media organisation that is no longer solely a radio broadcaster but New Zealand’s most widely distributed and trusted media organisation that produces, broadcasts and publishes across multiple platforms.
The creation of new studio spaces will facilitate both existing operations and expanded technologies and mediums, including podcast, digital and video etc, with the potential to become RNZ’s preferred supplier for its other premises in Wellington and Christchurch. This also supports RNZ’s lifeline utility role ensuring robust and independent capability from Auckland.
We will require both Audio Production and Video Production solutions for the new premises. We want to build a strong audio solution, with some video capability in a number of studios capable of recording and distributing live and on-demand content.
