The two bi-carb tanks at the Turitea Water Treatment Plant are critical for maintaining water quality during rain events and process fluctuations, although the tanks are not needed under normal steady-state conditions and therefore operate irregularly, their presence provides a critical safety net, ensuring the plant can continue to produce safe and reliable drinking water even when raw water quality is highly variable.

The existing platform and associated components are showing signs of aging and deterioration; thus, upgrades are required to ensure continued operational reliability, safety, and efficiency. This includes renewing tank roof platforms, installing mixers with guide rails and automated seal flushes, replacing bicarb loading chutes, upgrading level sensors, and rewired/automated control connections compliant with NZ standards. The works will improve operator safety, reduce manual interventions, and enhance bicarb mixing performance.
