Pharmac is planning on issuing a competitive process for supply of iron (as ferric carboxymaltose) infusion for use in community and hospital settings.

Iron infusion is indicated for the treatment of iron-deficiency anaemia.


The proposed outcomes of this procurement are to make savings in the medicines budget, and to potentially remove current funding criteria and open list iron (as ferric carboxymaltose) infusions without restriction.

Pharmac would reserve the right to widen access, or not, subject to budget availability and bids received.

The approximate gross annual expenditure of iron (as ferric carboxymaltose) inf. in the 2024/25 FYR was approximately $9.5 million.
