Overview

This Notice of Information (NOI) is to provide project information ahead of the Request for Tender which is intended to be advertised later in September or early October 2025. The contract commencement date is anticipated to be towards the end of November 2025, with the physical works being completed in the current NZTA financial year.

This NOI is provided as an early indication only of the project scope and will not form part of any future tender documents or contract documents.

The Symes Bridge is located on SH39 (BSN 562) and carries the state highway over the Moakurarua Stream. The bridge was constructed circa 1963. The existing three span superstructure comprises four steel beams with a composite reinforced concrete deck slab and a central 20.73m span supported on reinforced concrete wall type piers with edge spans 7.62m between reinforced concrete abutment and wall type pier.

The contract works involve:
• replacement of the existing bridge superstructure with a new superstructure (steel I girders with a composite reinforced concrete deck slab)
• strengthening of the pier crosshead and modification to the abutment wingwalls
• installation of a thrie-beam barrier system
• regrading and widening (granular pavement) of the existing carriageway approaches
• relocation of two Chorus ducts and a Vodafone fibre optic cable on the new bridge deck
• construction of a rock revetment (D50 = 500mm) and reno rock mattress

The construction work will require a full road closure, and a local detour route is available. Working timeframes and road closure dates are yet to be confirmed, but is tentatively planned around April 2026.

Key points are -
1. The contact works are anticipated to cost in the order of $2.5M.
2. Contractors must be pre-qualified to “Bridge Construction – Level B (3B)” and “Surfacing – Level C (2C)”.
3. The tender will be evaluated by PQM.
4. Off-site procuring and manufacturing will be required to prefabricate bridge components ahead of the road closure.
5. Resource consent will be obtained by the Principal for the scour remediation works.
6. A full road closure is required for the bridge deck replacement and is likely to be for approximately 3-6 weeks.
